The Wizard’s Tome Belongs To Those Willing To Take It! - Ashcan Version
A downloadable game
You are the Apprentice to an all-powerful Wizard in the hidden wilderness. You were a promising prodigy with magical inclinations. In theory you should be learning sorcery, wizardly things and other arcane stuff. Instead, you’re given menial tasks and sent on errands as the Wizard toils away in his study, doing REAL magic.
-----------------------------------------------
THE THREE RULES
The first rule about being an Apprentice is that you can NEVER INTERFERE with the Wizard’s work. He’s too busy to be bugged dealing with the constant needs of an Apprentice.
The second rule about being an Apprentice is to NEVER BE IDLE. The Wizard gives us Apprentices many tasks, and it is important to accomplish them to the best of your ability.
The third and most important rule about being an Apprentice is that you understand the Wizard is a prude who has no interest in being a good teacher or mentor in anything arcane. Don’t ask him to teach you anything, and don’t expect to become some kind of wizard yourself.
If you break any of these rules, your magic will be revoked and you will be dismissed.
… Of course, the reason you’re reading this is because you’ve already broken the first rule, haven’t you? You’re in the Wizard’s study right now, looking anxiously across the room to try and find something of his to use before he comes back and rips your magic from you. We get it, we’ve all been there…
-----------------------------------------------
The Wizard’s Tome is a legacy-style roleplaying-game about the life and work of an Apprentice serving a jerk of a boss. In it, you and two other players must take on the shared mantle of a single Apprentice in order to complete your daily duties. You’ll face off against deadly monsters, deliver potions and parcels to the locals, and learn to craft certain items that might help you in your job.
Using legacy mechanics, the world around you builds and changes with each session as old Apprentices leave their mark on the world, and new Apprentices change rules, magical artifacts, and even facts about the land and the Wizard himself. Each session plays differently and creates a unique story about a particular Apprentice.
Between the three players in each game, you collaboratively tell the story of the Apprentice through the three appointment of three distinct roles.
THE SIGHT - SEE THE WORLD AROUND YOU
THE HAND - ACCOMPLISH THE WIZARD’S TASKS
THE MAGIC - AFFECT THE STATUS QUO
Each of these roles are needed to be an effective Apprentice. Each are in charge of their own domains. As long as they remain in balance, your job should be pretty simple. Complete the Wizard’s tasks and be the best Apprentice you can be.
-----------------------------------------------
did you complete the Wizard’s Task today?
THE WIZARD’S TASKS
Each day the Apprentice receives a task from the Wizard. Using a deck of cards, a handful of various-sided dice and something to use as tokens, the Apprentice must their best to complete the Wizard’s daily task.
Success means another day of having a job. Failure means testing the Wizard’s patience.
Sometimes, the tasks are hard to complete without some magical assistance. Unfortunately, the Wizard keeps a pretty harsh limit on how much of his magic you can borrow. Without your own magic to rely on, it might be the difference between having a job and getting your magic revoked altogether.
Remember - if you fail, you lose your magic. Jobs like these only come once in a lifetime.
